RVS Live: Swiss Re, the largest reinsurer in 2016

Swiss Re has surpassed Munich Re as the world's largest reinsurer (from the reinsurance gross premiums written -GPW - in 2016), a position that it has not held since 2009, according to the AM Best rankings presented in Monte Carlo.

The volume of unaffiliated GPW of Swiss Re represented 35.62 billion USD, while Munich Re had 33.15 billion USD.

Swiss Re and Munich Re together represent over 30% of all GPW in Top 50, with the first 10 players reaching to just under 70% - 156 billion USD.

Despite the syndicated nature of reinsurance industry and cedents' efforts to diversify their reinsurance panel to spread the risk, it is very clear that reinsurance business is aggregated among the industry big players, AM Best stated.

Moving down the list, Hannover Re and SCOR have maintained their three and four positions. Berkshire Hathaway, with a 500 million year - over - year increase, surpassed Lloyd's to the fifth position.

Looking at the AM Best 50 largest reinsurers together, it can be noticed a y-o-y growth of roughly 3% - 7.4 billion USD, to 226.6 billion USD.
