POLAND: The third quarter was the most expensive period for motor insurers

During 9M2023, insurers operating in Poland paid a total of PLN 12.07 billion (~EUR 2.61 billion) on MTPL and motor insurance. This is PLN 1.2 billion more than a year ago, when companies paid out PLN 10.83 billion, the Insurance Guarantee Fund reported in the latest Information Bulletin of the UFG Information Center, Gazeta Ubezpieczeniowa (Insurance Gazette) wrote.

From January to September, insurance companies paid out PLN 6,914.1 million (vs PLN 6,251.2 million a year earlier) for MTPL. The remaining PLN 5,152.9 million (vs PLN 4,579.3 million in 9M2022) were paid for MoD. The third quarter was the most expensive period of this year for motor insurers. From July to September, MTPL and MoD paid claims amounted to PLN 4,085.7 million, while total value in 1Q was PLN 4,048.7 million and in 2Q - PLN 3,932.6 million.

During 9M2023, 1,304.7 thousand insurance cases were reported for both types of motor insurance (vs 1,302.9 thousand in 9M2022). The month with the largest number of losses was May. In 3Q2023, the highest number of MTPL claims occurred: in September – 75.4 thousand, while in July and August their number did not reach 71 thousand. On MoD side, the greatest toll was taken in August - 70.2 thousand claims, the source said.
