UKRAINE: in 1Q2023 the MTIBU paid almost UAH 114 million to victims of road accidents

20 April 2023 —
According to the results of the first quarter of 2023, MTIBU made 2.1 thousand payments from the Bureau's Victim Protection Fund for a total of UAH 113.9 million (~EUR 2.85 million).

At the same time, the number of payments almost returned to the level of the same period in 2021, when 2.07 thousand payments were made, according to a press release from the MTIBU (Motor Transport Bureau of Ukraine).

The Bureau noted that in the first quarter of 2022 there was a significant drop in indicators associated with the start of military aggression by Russia, so 2021 will be a more correct comparison base.

The press release says that the average size of the regulatory payment has increased significantly over 2 years - from UAH 37.5 thousand to UAH 53.5 thousand (+42%). According to the Bureau's experts, this growth is due to several factors as devaluation and inflation, which means an increase in the cost of spare parts for vehicles. In addition, a certain role in the growth of the average payment was played by an increase in the sums insured (maximum amount of payment limited by law), introduced on July 1, 2022.

The largest share in payments is still associated with damage caused by the owners of uninsured vehicles (those who caused accidents without valid MTPL policy) - 61% number-wise and 68% amount-wise. The number of payments reached 1.3 thousand, the amount - UAH 78 million. These data indicate that a significant number of drivers continue to ignore the obligation to purchase MTPL policy, the Bureau reported.
